Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about WhereWasI
Yes. Where was I ? includes a full Apple Watch app — today's visits, week and month summaries, and your top places — plus a Smart Stack complication. On iPhone you also get Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets showing recent visits, a live dwell timer, today's visit count, and your current location.
Yes. You can import your Google Maps Timeline export, as well as Moves and Arc Timeline data — just open the import screen and add your file. Your past places are matched to locations automatically.
Collections group your visits into themes you care about. Track your progress through the U.S. National Parks, the 100 Famous Japanese Castles, countries and regions, or create custom collections with your own keywords — they fill in automatically as you visit matching places, and you can share your progress.
Photo Check-Ins are visits automatically created from the photos on your device. Each time you open the app, it groups your photos by time and location and matches each group to the nearest saved place. Unlike tracked visits they show where you were rather than how long you stayed — and if you delete a photo, its check-in simply disappears. Your photos are never uploaded or modified.
Where was I ? uses your photo library to discover places based on where your photos were taken — this powers Photo Check-Ins, puzzle unlocks, and collection discovery. To grant or update it, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Where Was I and choose Full Access. "Limited Access" only scans the photos you pick, so some visits may be missed.
Photo Check-Ins are rebuilt from your photos every time the app launches, so reassigning one to a different place may reset on the next launch. That's because check-ins are regenerated fresh rather than saved permanently like tracked visits — the app warns you about this when you reassign one.
Yes. Use the manual visit wizard to add a stop that wasn't recorded, edit any visit's arrival and departure times, or split a single visit into two when one stop was really two. Every visit shows whether it was detected automatically, added by you, or imported.
The app uses Apple's Visit Monitoring API to automatically detect when you arrive at and leave locations. This happens in the background with minimal battery impact.
Yes! With 'Always' location permission, the app receives visit notifications even when it's not running. Make sure to grant this permission in Settings.
This app needs "Always" location access to work properly — it's how we detect when you arrive at and leave places, even when the app isn't open. To grant or update permission: go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Where Was I and select Always. "While Using" will only track visits when the app is on screen, and "Never" disables tracking entirely. For the best experience, choose "Always".
Tap on any visit to see its details, then tap 'Assign Location' to search for nearby places or create a custom label.
When a new visit arrives, the app checks if its coordinates fall within any saved location's radius. If matched, the visit is auto-assigned to that location. If no match is found, a new location is created using nearby places or the address. If visits aren't matching your saved locations, the radius might be too small. GPS can vary 10-50 meters between visits, so increase the radius in Location Details (up to 500m) or adjust the location's coordinates using 'Adjust Location on Map' to better center it.
iCloud Sync backs up your data and lets you view visits from all your devices. Important: You must enable iCloud Sync in Settings for backup to work. Without it, all your data will be permanently lost if you delete or reinstall the app. How it works: • Each device tracks and backs up its own visits separately • Your visits are not merged or shared between devices • You can view other devices' visit history (read-only) by enabling them in Settings → iCloud Sync → Show Visits From Example: If you have an iPhone and iPad, each device records its own visits. On your iPhone, you can toggle on your iPad to see where you've been with it—but those visits stay owned by the iPad.
Location accuracy depends on available signals (GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular). The app shows the accuracy for each visit. Typically, accuracy is within 10-100 meters.
Sometimes the system sends multiple updates for the same visit. The app automatically merges these, but occasionally duplicates may appear. You can delete any unwanted entries.
The app tracks significant stops, not continuous movement. At a ski resort, you'd see visits for the base lodge and a long lunch, but not every chairlift or brief rest. Large venues often appear as one long visit. This is designed for 'Where did I spend time?' rather than detailed path tracking.
Absolutely. All data is stored locally on your device and synced only to your personal iCloud account. We never see or store your location data on any external servers.
